| Known as
the "Heavenly Kingdom", Sichuan Province is rich in natural
resources and cultural heritage. It is one of the largest provinces
in China, and the most heavily populated. The name Sichuan means "four
rivers" and refers to four of the 80-plus mighty rivers that
tumble through the province. In the eastern region of the province,
the great Chuanxi plain supports one of the densest rural populations
in the world, while the regions to the west are mountains and sparsely
populated, principally by Tibetans. The remote mountains of Sichuan,
bordering Gansu and Shaanxi, are the habitat of the giant panda. The
famous spots of interests in Sichuan are Ermei Mountain, Sleepy Dragon
Nature Reserve, Leshan Grand Buddha, and Nine-Stockade Gully. |

is the capital of Sichuan, also the administrative, educational and
cultural center and a major industrial base. It is also without the
question the economic, political and military linchpin of the south-west.
The name Chengdu means perfect metropolis. The most intriguing aspects
of the city is its artisans: basket-weavers, cobblers, itinerant dentists,
tailors, house-ware merchants and snack hawkers who swarm the streets
and contribute to its bustling energy. The main spots of interests
around Chengdu are Monastery of Divine Light, Azure City Mountain,
and Dujiangyan Irrigation Project. |
